Christian perspective of Netflix

Netflix is perhaps one of the better known streaming services of this day and age. Because of that, it has the potential to greatly influence and impact hundreds of thousands of people. While Netflix does include quite a few good movies and shows, such as inspirational films like "God's Not Dead", or wholesome family friendly shows such as "One Day at a Time," "Gilmore Girls," or "The Great British Baking Show," it also streams some that are morally questionable, and as Christians, that should be objectionable to us, such as the animated series "Big Mouth." Immoral shows and movies most commonly violate the media key of Human Dignity. This is because most shows that are immoral are objectionable because they in some way or another objectify and de-humanize people, whether that be through obscenity, or gratuitous violence. This is wrong, since every human has dignity, and should never be portrayed as merely an object. At the same time, though, Netflix has many movies and shows that do uphold the dignity of the person, which is a good thing. So when browsing Netflix, looking for something to watch, its important to remember the key of attitude awareness, and really consider exactly what message (good or bad) a certain movie or show is trying to give. In this way, we can be aware of, and avoid, any immoral messages, but also, if we are really looking at something closely, we can see and appreciate aspects of beauty, truth, and goodness that may be present in a movie or show. These things should always be present in, and emphasized in, every piece of media that is created.

Be careful with younger kids

Netflix is fine for all ages if the parent controls what is watched. Many shows are from US and despite being geared towards young children will use words and rudness/bullying that are innapropriate in the UK where we have higher standards. Aged 10 I think children can navigate the children's section by themselves. But personally I've canceled it as I think it's mostly "trash" with no real benefit to kids.

parental controls are lazy and limited

Parental controls in Netflx group older children into either (1) Teens who can view certificate 12 content or (2) Adults who can view 15 and 18 certificate content. These make the 15 certificate completely redundant. Netflix market themselves to the whole family across multiple devices, but don't offer useful controls. Really really poor.

Netflix - Mixed Opinions...

I think that really, this is a family friendly app. I chose 5+ because the lowest rating is "G" and I think that 5 is the youngest a child should be watching any "G" movie. But, I think that parents should monitor their child's activity and make sure that a child under 12 only has access to 12 and below. I love this app, I watch it as my main source of entertainment. Even if your child is over 12, though, I would still monitor their activity.

Alot of hard leftist views and pornography. Unsafe access for kids.

Children should NEVER have unsupervised access to this "service". Almost ALL the comedy on here is leftist, raunchy, "white privelage" woke garbage or a combination of all of the above. Marvel has abandoned their hero shows and Netflix is a mine field of often very pornographic and adult material with scarce Kid friendly parental controls. Netflix is basically a combination of HBO and Cinemax in terms of content. You will get movies on a fairly regular basis but so much of the programming is sub par Netflix funded B movie slog. We are always thinking about cancelling the service, being cheap is the only reason we even kept it going. Most of this is last resort when there's nothing left to watch.

You Can Set Parental Controls

Netflix has lots of kids shows but it also has adult shows too. If you are nervous to have your kids watch Netflix then just turn on parental controls so they can't click on any shows that aren't kid-friendly.
