What’s It About?
NIGHT TERRORS: BLOODY MARY employs the legend of Bloody Mary to terrify you. In this game, you sit in the dark and look at your tablet's screen intently, waiting until just when you think nothing is going to happen and then, wait, what was what? Using flashes of light, quick images, scary sound effects, and your own expectations, this does everything it can to scare you.
Is It Any Good?
By utilizing a mix of unexpected flashing images and carefully crafted sound effects, this augmented reality game creates a truly frightening experience. Inspired by the titular legend, Night Terrors: Bloody Mary -- the sequel to 2016's Night Terrors: The Beginning -- uses your tablet's camera and audio capabilities to make you feel like there's something in the room with you ... something unnatural. Played in the dark, the app superimposes strange images (made even freakier by having a grainy quality) and sudden flashes of ... something against the image coming from your camera, along with a variety of sound effects, for a horriying experience of both the "jump out at you" and psychological variety. They even got Oren Peli, the director of the horror movie Paranormal Activity and the producer of its sequels, to be the game's executive producer.
But while this is really scary, not everyone will appreciate the game's slow pace. It can sometimes take a while for anything to happen, and on at least one occasion you may miss something because you look away from the screen thinking that you have time to give your eyes a quick break. This also works best in a dark room, which limits when you can play it, since most rooms aren't totally dark when the sun is out. Despite these minor flaws, though, Night Terrors: Bloody Mary is still a scary experience for anyone looking to ... wait, what's that behind you?
