Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Paper Train is a "traffic control" style game that requires you to hit track switches at appropriate times in order to keep a series of trains from colliding. Wandering cows function as an added obstacle, and if a train hits one, it will flatten the animal into an inkblot with a yucky squishing sound. Those cow collisions feel somewhat violent, but they're mitigated by the fact that these are "sketch" cows, meant to look like moving pen-and-ink drawings, as opposed to realistic animals. Both the standard and HD versions are compatible with iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad.
Is it any good?
The unique pen-and-ink graphics of PAPER TRAIN are an immediate draw -- these are fabulously different visuals that, all on their own, feel almost worth the price of admission. But this is a solid traffic control game as well, with a pretty high (but not frustratingly unbeatable) challenge level. The cows, which wander randomly, make the game a whole lot tougher, but in a good way. If one strolls too close to a track, you need to quickly tap it to turn it around. It's an extra task that can steal your attention away from conducting the trains. Being able to keep both trains and cows safe can take a lot of trial and error, but if you've got the patience to work through it, you should really enjoy the ride.
