PBS KIDS Video App Poster Image

TV show clips in easy-to-navigate app for young kids.

What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn basic educational elements such as pre-reading and literacy skills, basic science concepts, vocabulary, basic math concepts (such as counting and patterns), and more. Kids can also learn about a variety of more specialized topics such as animals on Wild Kratts, or Spanish on Oh Noah. This is not an interactive app; yet, by watching these well-crafted shows, kids can practice prediction skills and view models of characters making wise decisions. PBS KIDS Video is a safe and educational viewing choice, but lack of interaction or follow-up activities makes for a passive learning experience.

Ease of play

This app is very easy for kids to use. Tapping the show channels is sufficient for the very young, and the additional selection features are easy to navigate for those who are looking for more control. Navigation controls allow kids to skip to the next clip, return to the previous clip, and pause. Kids can also choose specific clips from each show, bookmark favorites, and tap the video portion of the screen at any time to make the video clip full-screen.

Family promoting

I am trying to instill in my grandchild that their are other family types, not just the 'nuclear' one. She has asked me why she doesn't see her mom and dad everyday, like all of her classmates. I tell her that she's lucky because she gets to see her grandma everyday and some of them don't. While we love the programming on PBS Kids, I cringe when the shows have an intermission. I know what's coming so I try to distract her as much as possible.
