What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division spanning five grade levels. They'll work on addition and subtraction skills starting with adding 0s and 1s and advance to adding and subtracting triple digit numbers. Multiplication and division starts with 0s and 1s and advances to 99 x 99 or dividing two digits into 9,801. Multiplication tables are included as a category as well. Kids who need help can see problems broken down by a visual math strategy to help them see the concepts behind the math. Pet Bingo - by Duck Duck Moose is an excellent tool to encourage kids to develop math skills beyond memorization.

Ease of play

There are no instructions, but play is intuitive. If kids don't respond quickly, the cute pets play peek-a-boo to draw kids' attention to the right area.

What's it about?

Kids choose addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, or mixed operations and a level: easy, medium, or hard. They then answer math problems and find the answers on a bingo grid. When they've correctly answered enough questions to get bingo, they win a pet or food for their pet. Between math games, kids can play with and care for their pets in the pet pen, a carnival-like park. If kids are stuck on a problem, they can tap the question mark to see the problem broken down using a math strategy -- such as 10 frames or number lines for addition and subtraction, as well as arrays and commutative and distributive properties for multiplication and division. Parents can view reports showing the percentage of problems kids answered correctly and their progress in each skill set.

Builds automaticity AND is one my girls want to play!

We limit screen time on weekdays to about 20 minutes/day with a learning app. My girls (ages 5 and 7) used to groan about being limited to the "learning" folder but they LOVE Duck, Duck Moose's Pet Bingo and they have been playing it consistently for several months. This app is not a substitute for teaching the concepts BUT it provides a good opportunity for building fluency with numbers and my girls love taking care of their little pets.
