Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that PipeRoll is a puzzle app in the form of water pipes. The goal is to connect all the water pipes so that the water flows through the system without any blockage or leaks. Once you get used to how to rotate the pipes, maneuvering them is easy. There are 100 levels that get progressively more challenging. The trick is in figuring out how to connect them all, or even in some cases, what not to connect. For each level, the goal is to complete the puzzle fast enough to get a gold star. An iPad-only version called PipeRoll HD is also available; gameplay is similar. This may be a better option if you're going to use an iPad as the user experience varied at the time of this review when using PipeRoll (non-HD) on the iPad.
What's it about?
In PipeRoll, players tap on water pipe pieces to connect them to get running water from the water plant to houses. Tapping on the pieces will move them clockwise, and pieces will connect automatically when they are lined up. Swiping or trying to rotate the pieces with your finger does not work, and will probably disconnect unintended pieces. As the levels progress, layers of difficulty are added on as you try to beat the clock. You unlock the next level when you complete the previous one and can revisit any completed levels.
Is it any good?
If you are a puzzle lover, PipeRoll is for you. With 100 puzzles that get pretty challenging, PipeRoll provides hours and hours of fun. In pipe fashion, you can easily track your progress and see how far you’ve gotten and what star status you've attained on each completed level. However, the app only records your best time if you've beaten the recommended "best time." You'd also be only trying to beat your own best scores as it is a one-player game with no social networking features. A few instructional prompts pop-up in the game, but otherwise, it is for you figure out. PipeRoll is a simple game, but is oddly addicting for both kids and adults.
