Is It Any Good?
While not a flawless adventure, this PIRATE MYSTERIES HD is a decent digital diversion for puzzle fans. The silly story surrounds Mary Blade and her father, a wannabe pirate, as they wash up on an island after their ship was struck by lightning. Mary must navigate the strange land, interact with locals, and solve ancient riddles in order to get off the island alive -- but there's also a supernatural twist thrown in for good measure. Much of the gameplay involves finding a list of objects in a busy scene. For example, you might be asked to look for a quill pen, cane, or sword in a shack littered with many dozens of objects. Problem is, the objects have absolutely no relevancy to the story or scene. For example, why do you need to find a carrot in a cave? Plus, the items are often too small to find and the scenes are sometimes too dark. Pirate Mysteries HD also offers a few twists to the Where's Waldo formula. This includes riddles (e.g. the hint is "You need me to drink wine," and answer is a corkscrew) and 10 different mini-games. Overall, Pirate Mysteries is an enjoyable and relaxing puzzler, but it doesn’t get it all right.
