A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Ease of Play

The game is easy to play, as you simply use your fingertip to find well-hidden objects in a busy scene. If you get stuck, there are two kinds of hints to use. Bonus mini-games can be skipped altogether if too tough.

Violence

The game has some implied violence, such as images of knives, swords, and guns to search for in busy scenes. Some dialogue has violent undertones, such as the character, Mary, threatening someone with violence. One scene shows a sword thrown into a map and the blade sticks into the table.

Sex

The main character, Mary, sports shows some cleavage in a low-cut shirt.

Language
Consumerism
Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

The game contains images and references to drinking and smoking. For example, you must look for wine and beer or related objects. One riddle says "I will make you happy, but too much of me will make your head muddled" (wine) and another one "You need me to drink wine" (corkscrew). The character also makes a reference to no rum left on the ship. She also meets a man smoking a pipe.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this app is a puzzle adventure game that includes several images of weapons (not out of context for a pirate adventure), plus references to and images of alcohol (beer, wine, and rum) and
smoking (pipe). A non-HD version is also available for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Is it any good?

While not a flawless adventure, this PIRATE MYSTERIES HD is a decent digital diversion for puzzle fans. The silly story surrounds Mary Blade and her father, a wannabe pirate, as they wash up on an island after their ship was struck by lightning. Mary must navigate the strange land, interact with locals, and solve ancient riddles in order to get off the island alive -- but there's also a supernatural twist thrown in for good measure. Much of the gameplay involves finding a list of objects in a busy scene. For example, you might be asked to look for a quill pen, cane, or sword in a shack littered with many dozens of objects. Problem is, the objects have absolutely no relevancy to the story or scene. For example, why do you need to find a carrot in a cave? Plus, the items are often too small to find and the scenes are sometimes too dark. Pirate Mysteries HD also offers a few twists to the Where's Waldo formula. This includes riddles (e.g. the hint is "You need me to drink wine," and answer is a corkscrew) and 10 different mini-games. Overall, Pirate Mysteries is an enjoyable and relaxing puzzler, but it doesn’t get it all right.
