What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Puzzle Quest 3 is a puzzle combat game for iOS and Android devices. Both the player and their enemies use swords, magic, crossbows, and other weapons to try and kill each other, though there's no blood or gore. One of the female characters is dressed in revealing clothing, but she never says or does anything suggestive. The player has multiple options when it comes to the skin color of their character, and can also chose between playing as a male or a female persona. Defeating enemies gives the player in-game currency, new weapons and armor, and ways to upgrade said items. But the player can also purchase both the in-game currency and upgrade elements by using real-world money in the game's store. There's also two VIP packages -- yearly and monthly -- that give buyers plenty of both. Read the developer's privacy policy for details on how your (or your kids') information is collected, used, and shared, and any choices you may have in the matter, and note that privacy policies and terms of service frequently change.

What’s It About?
In PUZZLE QUEST 3, you play as a hero who's attacked while wandering the countryside, and end up impressing a fair maiden with your combat skills. At her request, you follow her to the city of Angbar, where you find work that, well, further tests your combat skills. Except that since this is a puzzle game -- it's right there in the name -- combat involves you matching three or more of the same kind of gems before the clock runs out, with your number and type of matches serving to hurt, and hopefully kill, your enemies.
Is It Any Good?
While puzzle-based combat games are rather common, this one adds some interesting wrinkles that make it feel rather fresh. In Puzzle Quest 3, you play as a hero who's just walking alone in the forest when you're attacked and have to defend yourself. But instead of smacking goblins and giant spiders with a sword by hitting a button, you have to move three or more gems into a line... which then makes you smack something with your sword. That said, this does copy a bit from more action-oriented fantasy games. You have to talk to people, while dispatched enemies drop weapons, spells, and armor, and the resources needed to improve them.
Now, while players have gotten to smack orcs by playing puzzle games before, what makes this fun and challenging is how it doesn't play like every other match-3 game. For starters, there's only a few seconds on the clock, which starts clicking when you make your first move. But you can make as many moves as you like, including diagonally, before the clock runs out. Also, the gems you line up don't disappear until your turn is over, which means you can line up three and then four and then five if you have the time. That said, because the board is always five gems by seven, and can be studied carefully before your turn starts, this is less of an intellectual challenge than most match-3 games. But if you're looking to test your reflexes more than your brains, Puzzle Quest 3 should give you a hero's welcome.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about violence in video games. Is the impact of the violence in Puzzle Quest 3 affected by the fact that players and their enemies use various weapons to kill each other, but there's no blood or gore? Would the impact be intensified if there was more realistic injuries in the game? Does that make any sense considering that this is a match-3 game?
How do you decide when to spend money on a free game? You can earn items by defeating enemies, but you can also buy them with real-money from the game's store, so how do you determine what the value of these items happens to be?
The story and characters in Puzzle Quest 3 are clearly influenced by fantasy novels, but does playing this game make you want to read one of those novels?
