Quick Math - Multiplication Table & Arithmetic Game

Timed problem sets make arithmetic a fun sport.

What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn the concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in a timed flash-card-style game. The app focuses on building fluency, so kids don't get much instruction. However, they get plenty of practice with key arithmetic and estimation skills. One of the great features is that problems within a level scroll through the screen, so as kids are working on one problem, they see the next one coming up. This helps them improve speed and estimation, which are powerful tools when trying to master core math skills. It would be great if the feedback for incorrect answers were more developed so kids could learn from their mistakes and see how to answer those problems correctly. Still, overall, practice makes perfect with Quick Math – Multiplication Table & Arithmetic Game.

Ease of play

Quick Math - Multiplication Table & Arithmetic Game is easy to use. Kids answer math equations by writing the answer on the screen with a fingertip before time runs out. The app's handwriting recognition registers the number, though occasionally the recognition is incorrect. Sometimes players have to enter their answer a few times, which adds time to their score. Kids have unlimited chances to get their answer right before time runs out, but incorrect or skipped answers negatively affect their overall score.

What's it about?

Kids first choose a set of arithmetic problems then select a difficulty level. Each set contains 20 math problems. Kids write answers with their fingertips anywhere on the screen (which shows up in black boldface) before time runs out. The app's handwriting recognition identifies and tracks answers. Kids can attempt answers as many times as they'd like or can skip problems entirely. A bar graph shows results at the end of each set, which are saved over time so kids can track their progress.

Is it any good?

QUICK MATH - MULTIPLICATION TABLE & ARITHMETIC GAME is a great app to keep arithmetic skills sharp. It's smartly designed, makes mental computation fun, and teaches necessary academic and everyday life skills. The app's handwriting recognition is impressive and does justice to even the scribbliest of writers. The interface is clean and uncluttered, and the performance tool encourages players with an easy-to-understand bar graph that auto-tracks progress. The accompanying music is mellow and unobtrusive and can be turned off entirely.

The app would be even better if it had customizable user settings. Horizontal equations differ from the stacked, vertical ones kids typically see at school, and the app doesn't allow players to change this orientation. The handwriting recognition isn't 100% accurate and sometimes doesn't enter the number 6 or mistakes 3 for 5, which adds time and lowers the player's score. It'd be nice to have the option to make custom equation sets to help kids target tricky numbers. Also, the option to turn off the timer would give kids a chance to practice and boost math confidence before entering into timed math sprints.

Families can talk about...

  • Point out where arithmetic is used in everyday life. How are addition and subtraction used at the grocery store? Why would carpenters want to know the times table for number 12 by heart? How might a chef use division or multiplication in the kitchen?

  • Share examples of how your kids apply arithmetic at home and school.
