A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Ease of Play

Figuring out the best angle from which to shoot your cannon -- and overcome the obstacles -- takes some getting used to. And the game never eases up, constantly ratcheting up the tension.

Violence

Human-looking dummies are shot out of a cannon with the goal of hitting a target. There's no blood, but the body will crumple when it hits an obstacle, with arms and legs flailing. They'll also occasionally scream (comedically) when they hit each other.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Ragdoll Blaster 2 HD is a physics-based puzzle game in which players hit a target by firing test dummies out of a cannon. Players are supplied with a cannon and unlimited fodder to clear obstacles and hit the target. The fewer dummies used, the higher the score. The ragdolls don't say much in the game aside from an occasional squeal when they hit each other, but on the title screen, one of the dummies sits off to the side and says encouraging things like "I know I can do it!" Despite the violent-sounding premise of the game, Ragdoll Blaster 2 HD is really more about puzzle solving than anything else. A similar version of the app is available for the iPhone and iPod Touch, minus a few levels that are made exclusively for the iPad.

Is it any good?

With more than 200 levels, Ragdoll Blaster 2 HD never gets old. What players may not realize is that much like Angry Birds,  the longer they play, the more they learn about physics. There's an undeniable visceral fun in shooting the ragdoll dummies out of a cannon, but the player's focus quickly shifts to puzzle solving and how to hit the target -- and the app never gives you an easy way out. The setup for the app is simple, but mastering it takes a long while, which are the key ingredients in a fun game.
