Robo Math

Customization options boost otherwise basic flash card app.

What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can practice basic math operations -- addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division -- with onscreen flash cards on Robo Math. Kids can also practice working efficiently as they give answers against a clock. If kids get a problem wrong, the correct answer shows up directly above the next problem on the following flash card, which can be confusing and distracting. Though it doesn't offer a deep learning experience, Robo Math is a decent flash card app for developing mastery of basic math facts.

Ease of play

Robo Math is mostly easy to use, the exception being that it is a bit confusing and distracting when, if a student gets a flash card wrong, the correct answer is given directly above the next problem on the following flash card.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Robo Math is a flash card style app that's not outstandingly unique, but does have some beneficial customization features. You can customize the quiz settings by the biggest number used in quiz problems, the number of problems on each quiz, and whether or not your student needs practice on a specific number. Robo Math also has a speed tracker that shows kids how long it's taking them to solve each group of flash cards. The timer appears in the upper right corner of the quiz screen -- which depending on your kid, can either be motivating or distracting.

What's it about?

Kids tap "Quiz Settings" to customize a group of math questions (highest number used in quiz problems, number of problems on each quiz, and whether or not they need practice on a specific number). Next, they tap one of four tabs on the main screen: addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. Kids press "Start," and a flash card appears on the screen along with a calculator-style keypad, which they use to enter the correct answers against a timer in the right-hand corner. Kids see their score at the end of the question set.

Is it any good?

At $.99, ROBO MATH does a fine job at giving kids a way to practice basic math operations skills without needing to carry around paper flash cards. The option to customize the highest number on which to practice makes this app accessible to many different ages and math levels. The music (which can be turned off) is sort of annoying and distracting, as is the fact that if kids get a problem wrong, the correct answer shows up directly above the next problem on the following flash card. There's no way to turn off the timer, so if your kids don't like being timed on flash cards, this isn't the app for them.

Families can talk about...

  • Set all customizable options to your kid's current skill level.

  • If your kids struggle with timed math, encourage them to focus on accuracy first, then speed, before moving to higher settings.
