Freeing caged birds is puzzling, yet addictive and fun.

What parents need to know

Ease of play

The app has clear instructions and a tutorial. It does ramp up in terms of difficulty, and some of the advanced levels are fiendish. Younger players will struggle with levels that require speed as well as problem solving.

Violence & scariness

The little bird in the game may be killed if it touches certain items like knives, fire, and bats. The bird loses a bunch of feathers, squawks, and then falls off the screen.

Privacy & safety

Some privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Crystal, an interactive network that allows users to upload real avatar photos, create a profile, set location, post scores on leaderboards, add friends, post status messages, and connect with Facebook friends or Twitter followers. The Crystal privacy policy states that it may collect and use information including name, email address, a phone’s Unique Device ID, and IP address. Crystal gives users the option to disagree to terms and conditions, after which new personal data will not be stored on their servers. This will reduce the functionality of the Crystal network for the user.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Rope Rescue HD is a puzzle game that asks the player to rescue birds that have been captured and caged. The player uses a parrot avatar to grab a rope and wrap it around a series of wheels. Once the rope is touching all of the wheels, the parrot can attach the rope to a bird cage and free the bird inside. The goal is to use as little rope as possible. Each puzzle has three levels of completion, signified by a series of three feathers. Players can simply complete a puzzle, or they can strive to do it with the least amount of rope and earn all three feathers. Things get tricky as the game introduces obstacles, including moving wheels and items that can cut the rope or harm the bird avatar. Collect butterflies to use in exchange for hints or to skip extra-hard levels.

Is it any good?

ROPE RESCUE HD is a fun and addicting game. The multiple levels of play and hint system make it accessible for a wide range of players, although earning the coveted three feathers is challenging in higher levels. The most frustrating levels involve a time challenge as well as obstacles, but it's easy to keep trying different approaches. Kids will enjoy seeing the birds they've saved flying around in the bird sanctuary.
