What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn storytelling and speaking skills as they exercise creativity with this imaginative game. As kids quickly try to connect the nine images into a logical story, they strengthen problem-solving and critical thinking. Telling stories on the spot requires kids to practice improvisational speaking, which can help improve their confidence and comfort in other public speaking situations. Rory's Story Cubes is a great tool for sparking creativity and engaging kids in speaking, thinking, storytelling, and collaboration.

Ease of play

The app is easy to use and has clear instructions. The dice occasionally get stuck, but it's a minor annoyance. Some of the images on the dice will need to be interpreted for younger players.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Rory's Story Cubes is the app version of an award-winning dice game that encourages storytelling and creativity. Shake the device to roll nine dice. Each die has a simple picture on it, such as a lock, turtle, flower, or word bubble. There are a variety of ways to play, but basically players use the images to create stories. Stories can be created individually or cooperatively. The app version of the game also includes the ability to take a photo of the dice or to lock the dice in play. This is a creativity generator more than a traditional game -- there are no winners or losers -- so parents should know that going in.

What's it about?

Kids shake the device or press a button to roll a set of nine dice, which have simple pictures on each of their six sides. Kids use the set of images to tell a story. There are no rules beyond this, so players can interpret the gameplay as they wish. Kids can drag and rotate cubes on the screen, changing the order. A camera button will take a photo of the current cube roll and save it to the device's photo album.

Is it any good?

RORY'S STORY CUBES is a simple app that leaves plenty of room to create your own rules and activities. Nine six-sided dice give you millions of possible combinations, and flexibility in both the rules and the interpretation of the pictures means plenty of replay value. The dice occasionally get stuck on an edge and require a bit of help to move them along, but that's a minor annoyance. The photo feature and the dice lock are nice additions for the app version of the dice game, eliminating the chance of the dice getting bumped midstory.
