A lot or a little?
The parents' guide to what's in this app.
What parents need to know
Parents need to know that Seline HD isn't just another virtual piano -- it's an app that literally turns the iPad into a unique musical instrument. It's played by using all five fingers of both hands to tap notes that are arranged similar to a computer keyboard and can be customized with 25 popular musical scales and modes. There are 23 synthetic voices, and nine drone sounds. The app also functions as a rudimentary audio recorder that saves recorded music as WAV files in iTunes.
Is it any good?
Anyone can play around in SELINE HD, but it takes practice to learn the intricacies of this sophisticated program. Previous musical experience -- such as knowledge of note names, scales, and modes, and an understanding of terms like "vibrato," "reverb," and "trill," -- is a plus as well. There are less intimidating and cheaper apps out there for younger kids who just want to make some noise (like Bebot, Magic Piano and Bloom HD), but enthusiasts will find Seline HD a wonderful and inspiring music-making tool.
