Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Sid's Science Fair is an educational app based on the television show Sid the Science Kid on PBS Kids. In the app, kids learn about a variety of early science concepts at three different science stations. In Collection Inspection, kids closely examine a collection of butterflies, leaves, buttons, or other items with a magnifying glass. They try to spot three specific elements, as well as explore on their own. In Chart It, kids categorize and sort object by color, type, position, pattern, or other criterion. By placing items on a chart, it helps them visualize data. In Time Machine, kids choose from a large number of things to see in action. Kids first put a series of five pictures in chronological order, and then they get to see nine pictures of the same object in action. Kids tilt the device or run their fingers along a strip to see the change over time in both directions.

What's it about?

In Sid's Science Fair, the popular PBS Kids character and his friends ask kids to play around with their science exhibits at their school's interactive science fair. In "Collection Inspection," kids look for specific details in a collection of related objects; "Chart It" has kids chart objects in groups by a particular characteristic, such as color or type; and in the "Time Machine" game, kids sequence a series of related pictures (such as a snowman melting or flower growing) before viewing time-lapsed photos of the event.

Is it any good?

SID'S SCIENCE FAIR is an excellent interactive app for young kids to learn and practice science. The concepts taught are solid, and have plenty of room for exploration within the topics. Each of the app's three science stations offers plenty of variety to keep kids' interest, and kids who already enjoy the fun and educational Sid the Science Kid television show will love having their favorite characters guide them as they explore.
