Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Singing Fingers HD is an easy-to-use app that lets kids create visual art and music at the same time using the iPad. Kids "fingerpaint" on the screen while making a noise into the device's built-in microphone. Whatever noise is picked up by the microphone -- whether it's singing, whistling, the sounds of a musical instrument being played, the siren of a passing fire truck, and so on -- gets recorded and incorporated into the art. Kids can then touch the art to hear the recording played back, dragging and tapping their fingers to create fun effects.
What's it about?
Kids can have fun creating a fusion of visual and auditory art. Kids will draw on a blank screen while making a noise (or saying a word). As they draw and make noise, the microphone on the device records their voice, and changes in their tone change the color of their drawing. They can then replay their recording while tracing their picture.
Is it any good?
Kids should have a blast exploring this fun and colorful app, which uses no menus and is very easy to jump into. The color of the paint changes depending on pitch, so kids can experiment by singing different tones to create a rainbow-like range of different colors. SINGING FINGERS HD encourages boundless creativity. A small complaint is that the sound quality of the recordings is far from perfect and often distorts or cuts out. It's the only glitch in an otherwise engaging app.
