A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Kids can learn to identify the rhythm of complete sentences and practice strategy and creativity in a puzzle-style, game-like environment. There's no direct instruction in what makes a complete sentence, but kids will combine words into a complete thought. The words available are varied and create some fun, silly, and nonsensical sentences; however, it's sentence structure that matters here, so kids will have fun with words, empowering them to take risks when writing. Sleep Furiously is a unique way for kids to play with the components of a complete sentence and would serve as a fun reinforcement of grammar concepts or writing exercises.

Ease of Play

Tutorial walks users through first time. Incomplete sentences can't be submitted.

Some words, such as "explodes" or "abducts," could be used to create somewhat violent sentences.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Sleep Furiously is a sentence-making game that has nothing to do with sleep. It matches the poetic potential of magnetic poetry with options to add a little individual-best competition. Kids need to be able to read independently, but the words included and sentences they can create with them are innocent, if often nonsensical. Kids can share a screenshot of a word board or sentence they've created via messaging or social media apps connected on the device, and there is no parent gate.

What's it about?

Connect words horizontally, diagonally, or vertically to create sentences in SLEEP FURIOUSLY. There are no rules for how much sense the sentence makes; it just has to be grammatically correct. Longer words earn more points. Play in Moves mode, where you get as many points as possible in five sentence moves. Play in Timed mode to get as many points as possible in 90 seconds, or play in Endless mode, just for the challenge of creating the most complex sentences possible. Words can be shuffled in Endless mode but not in the others. As you connect words, a sleeping face snores on and smiles when you've completed an acceptable sentence. The face wakes up when the challenge is over.

Is it any good?

Word lovers will get a thrill out of creating complex sentences with the limitations of available words. Sentences can be short and profound -- "wisdom teaches," which earns three points -- or longer and illogical -- "The sick athletes clumsily kiss cowardly metaphors," for 28 points. It's not clear how the scoring works, beyond longer sentences earning more points, and there's no way to review all the sentences created in a round. Players can see how a score compares with their highest scores and see their top-scoring sentence. The grammar grader isn't perfect, though, occasionally not recognizing homonyms that can be used as different parts of speech. A parent gate for social media sharing, sentence review, and varied word-connection options would take this inventive game even further.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about the possibilities of language: Play cooperatively to see the funny -- or poetic -- sentences you can make together.

  • Review with kids the parts of a sentence and note how you can't "submit" a set of words without making a complete thought with a subject and verb.
