Slide & Spin App Poster Image

Slide & Spin

Toddlers learn to slide, spin, and push on the iPad.

What parents need to know

Educational value

Toddlers can learn how to interact with a touch pad and develop fine motor skills such as turning, sliding, spinning, and pushing objects on a mobile device. Toddlers can learn to make the basic conclusion: "If I move this object on the screen in a certain way, then a surprise will appear," rewarding them for action. If parents help them record their own sounds to accompany each surprise, toddlers can learn how voice recording works. Slide & Spin is a colorful, engaging app and a good first experience on the iPad, especially for kids who are familiar with the real-life version of this toy.

Ease of play

It's made for toddlers, so as expected, this app is very easy to use; however, it's almost too easy to move from the game to the promotion page. It would be nice improvement if there were a child lock for that screen to keep toddlers from accidentally moving out of the app and onto the App Store.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Slide & Spin is an app for toddlers to practice fine motor skills such as sliding, spinning, and pushing buttons on the iPad. In essence, it's an adaptation of the classic wooden or plastic box toys for toddlers on which they tap, slide, and twist knobs to make objects pop out of the boxes. This digital version allows parents (and toddlers, with a parent's help) to record sounds that go with each object.

What's it about?

Kids simply slide, spin, or push on levers and buttons to see cute images of ducks, kittens, flowers, and other toddler-friendly objects. There's essentially one screen with which kids interact on SLIDE & SPIN (unless they get sidetracked by the "i" tab and move onto a promotional screen for other toddler apps). Parents can help kids use the voice-recording feature to create personalized sounds for playback such as "Meow" for when kids swipe the blue lever and see a kitty.

Is it any good?

This app bills itself as a toddler's first encounter with the touch pad, and that it could well be. Slide & Spin is simple enough not to frustrate little ones while being interesting enough to hold their toddler-size attention spans. The voice-recording feature that links a parent's voice (or a grandparent's, sibling's, or even the toddler's own voice) to the reward object kids see after sliding, spinning, or pushing the levers is especially nifty. Slide & Spin provides adorable, simple fun for the youngest app users.

Families can talk about...

  • Help your toddlers record their own sound effects for some of the reward objects, or record your own.

  • Name the reward objects as they appear, so your toddler can practice vocabulary and naming, too.
