What’s It About?
SMART ADVENTURES MISSION MATH 1: SABOTAGE AT THE SPACE STATION starts by giving kids a story about the space station. Kids choose an avatar, are introduced to different characters aboard the spacecraft, and begin by exploring different parts of the space station. There are five main corridors on the space station, with different labs on each. Kids choose a corridor, then a lab, and finally play the mini-games in the lab. Each mini-game begins with on-screen instructions and an animated tutorial. Games are not timed, but kids have to finish a certain number of problems correctly to complete a mini-game. As the game progresses, kids learn more about the sabotage and get closer and closer to solving the mystery.
Is It Any Good?
In SMART Adventures Mission Math 1: Sabotage at the Space Station kids can explore and practice a variety of skills at their own pace. The math skills that kids practice are generally what a fourth grader is expected to know and learn by the end of the school year. There's not a lot of depth to the coverage of each individual skill, but the variety of mini-games and content, as well as the engaging story line, make for an engaging learning experience. One of the more interesting aspects of the game is the integration of STEM topics into the problems. For example, as kids solve problems related to angle measures, they are working to help wire products in the robot lab. By using this app, kids can practice skills in key areas of elementary mathematics.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about what kids are learning in the games. Play some of the mini-games together.
Have kids design a pencil-and-paper version of a new mini-game that could be added to the mission. Make sure they focus on a particular content area such as fractions or shapes.
