Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Snugly ABC Flip Flap is a children's book app that allows kids to mix and match various creatures by swiping back and forth on the three "flaps." The app can read the words aloud and may teach the order of ABCs, but does not pronounce the letters themselves. The app is easy to use but it is also easy to accidentally hit the large "home" button, which looks like part of the illustration.
Is it any good?
SNUGLY ABC FLIP FLAP is a digital version of those old mix-and-match books with the flaps, allowing you to create odd creatures by pairing up a head, torso, and feet. There's one creature for every letter of the alphabet, and the illustrations are picture book quality. However, the educational value may be diminished by its whimsy: some words are entirely made up, and although most of the drawings are of real animals (like roosters and mice and cats) the name may be something else entirely (like joker and grubber and mewler). Young children may find this confusing, particularly if they are still learning their ABCs. Also, there was at least one misspelling: "uunderwater."
The interface is quite easy to use and even a toddler would be able to learn. The only quibble is the large "home" button which is in the corner of the illustration. Depending on which side of the screen the child is swiping, it is very easy to tap the home button by mistake and return to the main screen.
