Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode II

Common Sense Media says

So-so Sonic retread may confound newcomers to franchise.

What parents need to know

Ease of play

Old-school Sonic players will pick things up quickly, but beginners could have a very difficult time figuring out what to do. There's a tutorial, but it's not integrated into the game -- and many people will miss it. That leaves trial and error (and trying to decipher obscure drawing hints), which can get a little frustrating. Controlling Sonic is also less than optimal.

Violence & scariness

Enemies can cause Sonic to lose all the rings he has collected, but are not fatal when hit the first time.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode II is an arcade game that may thrill longtime fans of the series, but could confound newcomers. The game features the speedy hedgehog and his friend Tails performing all sorts of aerial maneuvers to collect rings and defeat their enemies. The game has some cartoon violence, but nothing to be overly concerned about. The game has a multiplayer mode, but it's restricted to nearby devices.

What's it about?

Sonic runs through a series of environments, collecting rings, and dodging obstacles. He does this by jumping, spinning and bouncing off obstacles, with his fox friend, Tails. The two work together when Sonic grabs Tails's hands and the fox friend spins his tail like a propeller, saving them both from a fall. The two can also combine into a big spinning ball to take out obstacles.

Is it any good?

The Sonic series is one that has split people over the years. Avid fans still love the games, but some others feel it has lost its spark. SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 4 EPISODE II isn't likely to end that debate. Fans will see it as an updated homage to 1993's Sonic CD, but newcomers to the series (and less enthusiastic players) will see it as a game that's missing that magic quality.

All of the basics are there, along with some new moves. And SEGA has solved a lot of the issues people complained about in Episode I. But when all is said and done, the game isn't especially welcoming to new players and isn't one you'll find yourself drawn back to on a regular basis.
