Cute mouse helps action words come alive for youngest kids.

What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn action verbs, such as "eat" or "swing" from Speech with Milo: Verbs. They can also learn how verbs are often used in sentences with the "-ing" or "-ed" form: "Milo is swinging at the park."  This app can help expand young kids' vocabularies, as well as improve their storytelling skills by using more active, animated language. Though some kids might not find this app very engaging, Speech with Milo: Verbs is a good, specific app that can help younger kids learn verbs and practice pronunciation.

Ease of play

The app is very easy to use, with color coded buttons. Two tutorials -- one for parents, one for speech therapists -- help adults maximize effectiveness of this app.

What's it about?

Kids tap on Milo the mouse, and he'll start acting out verbs such as knocking on a door; as the word "Knock" appears on the screen, a narrator says the word aloud. Tap again, and kids see and hear another verb. Touch a tab and the narrator uses the verb in a sentence that may include the "-ing" or "-ed" form: "Milo is swinging at the park." Parents and therapists can tap on specific instruction tabs for each to learn teaching tips for best use of SPEECH WITH MILO: VERBS.

Is it any good?

For kids who need extra speech help, Speech with Milo: Verbs can be quite helpful in introducing the concept of action-based words. It will be most useful for kids who are entertained by a cute mouse acting out happy things like "bounce" and "hug" and who need to learn the general concept of action words. Kids looking for practice with verbs as a part of speech or kids used to playing faster-paced apps may find this app monotonous.

Families can talk about...

  • Point it out whenever your child uses a particularly illustrative or strong verb.

  • To extend this app's lesson into feeling words, ask your kid how Milo may be feeling as he performs some of these action words. Is he happy? Upset? Tired?
