Star Battalion HD App Poster Image

Star Battalion HD

Fun if unoriginal space shooter has optional live chat.

What parents need to know

Ease of play

The game relies on the gyroscope to navigate your ship, which takes a little getting used to, but the basic control structure is actually quite easy to grasp.

The app is a space-based combat game, meaning you're constantly in dogfights with opposition forces, shooting at enemy ships and mechanized ground forces. Explosions abound throughout the game.

Not applicable

No obscenities are heard, but the game does use the Battlestar Galactica mock swear word "frack."

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Star Battalion HD is space-based action game that borrows liberally from most of the better-known properties in the science fiction universe, and has potential safety risks due to a live chat option. The game is essentially a series of seek-and-destroy missions as you and your squad (who aren't a lot of help in taking out enemy forces) fly around looking for a fight. There are other, less-violent missions, but they're few and far between. While there are lots of explosions, there is no blood or signs of human suffering. The game offers cooperative multiplayer with strangers, but you cannot play against them. There is also no voice chat during those co-op missions, which raises safety levels. Users opting to register for a Gameloft account can access live chat with strangers, a potential safety risk. A version of the app is also available for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Is it any good?

Take Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica and Star Fox, put them in a blender, and stir, and you'll probably come out with something like STAR BATTALION HD. The game doesn't have an ounce of originality, but as a space shooter it's not a bad title. Graphics, as they generally are with Gameloft titles, are well done, and the action is well paced and solid. Getting used to controlling your ship with the iPad's gyroscope is a bit tricky, but players can shift to a stick control if it proves too distracting. There are also a wide variety of environments. The lack of competitive multiplayer is something of a drawback, and some control bugs drag the game down a bit, but ultimately, this is an app that will appeal to anyone who enjoys a solid space combat game.
