Stickman Base Jumper App Poster Image

Stickman Base Jumper

High-flying game challenging but not overwhelming.

What parents need to know

Ease of play

Players simply need to tap the screen at the right time to get Stickman to walk, run, or jump (whichever is appropriate). The difficulty comes in learning how to estimate the trajectory of the fall -- and when to pull the cord on your parachute.

Stickman screams when he hits the ground (or runs into the side of a building) and users hear a crunching sound obviously meant to be his bones. There's no blood, however.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Stickman Base Jumper is a sports arcade game that simulates a highly dangerous real-world activity. Players will die often as they figure out how best to time and position a jump, resulting in them hearing their on-screen character scream in pain as his bones shatter. (All sounds can be turned off in the game's options menu, but if you want music, you'll have to handle the screams as well.) Players can share high scores via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional.

What's it about?

Players try to land a jumper in a narrow landing zone via a series of taps. Tap once and the jumper starts walking back on the roof, with markers showing the running head start he'll take. Tap again and he begins running toward the ledge (longer runs equal longer distance jumps). Tap a third time as he reaches the end of the platform to jump, then tap a final time to deploy his parachute. You must land within a certain amount of time. Landing closer to the center of the landing zone earns you stars, which can be used to unlock other jumps.

Is it any good?

Of all the Stickman games, Stickman Base Jumper is the one that's easiest for people to pick up and play, since it discards the standard "balance in the air" formula and reduces gameplay to a series of taps. Some fans of the series might grouse about this, but it makes for a game that is fun to play without being too overwhelming.

It's still challenging, but the controls are done masterfully and there's no real penalty for dying -- and if you do, you immediately want to try again.
