What's it about?

In STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE SUMMER FUN, Strawberry Shortcake and her friends are looking forward to their trip to Berry Breezy Resort when they find out the resort is closing for the day. Rather than letting that stop their fun, the friends decide to recreate the resort on the lake instead, each doing what she was most looking forward to enjoying: surfing, building sand castles, dancing, and snorkeling. Kids can read along with the story, play two games -- Berry Blast and Berry Bitty Surfing -- or color the coloring pages.

Is it any good?

Positive messages abound in this story, which manages to be sweet without going over the top with saccharine. Strawberry Shortcake and her friends make the best of their situation, and each friend does what she wants to do with her day rather than giving up her ideas and dreams to go along with the crowd. Though the story doesn't show the work they do, it does mention that the girls worked hard to make their lake into the resort they wanted. The interactive features are delightful. Kids will get a kick out of scrolling through the girls' last vacation photos or changing the designs on the surfboards. The games, which are good enough to stand on their own in an app, are impressively addictive and will appeal to a broader range than only fans of the characters.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about how the girls didn't let a problem with their plans ruin their fun but used their imaginations and some effort to still have fun.

  • Families also can talk about how each girl had a different idea about how she wanted to spend her day and enjoyed her own activities rather than simply doing what her friends were doing.
