Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP

Clever, arty adventure with mild violence, mature ideas.

What parents need to know

Ease of play

The mechanics involved in adventuring and combat take no time to master; players simply tap and swipe as directed or as they see fit. However, this game is no pushover. Solving puzzles by carefully searching and exploring environments takes time and determination, and some of the combat sequences require deft timing.

Players infrequently engage in sword-based combat against fantasy creatures and objects, including a three-eyed wolf and a magical triangle. Creatures simply fall to the ground when defeated. There is no blood or gore, though our hero does throw up on at least one occasion.

Upon signing into Twitter, players can easily tweet every line of dialogue in the game as they encounter it. This has proven an effective marketing tool, helping bump this decidedly non-mainstream game into Apple’s list of top paid apps.

Drinking, drugs, & smoking

The narrator smokes a pipe.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP is an adventure game in which players occasionally strike antagonistic magical creatures with a sword. The action is more or less innocuous, but a powerful soundtrack adds a sense of fear and trepidation to some scenes. Also, the difficulty and substance of the game’s point-and-tap puzzles is clearly geared for an older audience. Parents should note that if players sign into their Twitter accounts, every line of dialogue in the game’s story can be instantly tweeted to their followers. This clever marketing strategy has surely contributed to the title’s popularity on the app store.

Is it any good?

SUPERBROTHERS: SWORD & SWORCERY EP is the story of a female adventurer on a quest for an artifact known as the “trigon trifect,” a not-so-subtle reference to the Triforce of Legend of Zelda fame. This general description might make the game sound inviting to a broad audience, but its quirky aesthetic and distinct narrative style is targeted at a much more niche group: Fans of art house games.

With its old-school yet oddly modern 8-bit visual motif and ethereal score, Superbrothers pays tribute to inspirations as diverse as David Lynch (seen in a character known only as the “logfella”) and Robert E. Howard (our protagonist is a Conan-like warrior from the North) while providing a wholly original story hosted by a self-aware narrator who frames the entire experience as “a brave experiment in Input Output Cinema.” Expect quirky features such as the ability to tweet every line of dialogue via your own Twitter account as well as a game clock that syncs up with real-world moon cycles. It may not appeal to folks looking for the next Angry Birds, but it's a bona fide treat for fans of bold and innovative indie game design.
