A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Kids can learn to appreciate books, build vocabulary, and increase reading comprehension as they listen to some of the more than 2,500 audiobooks available through Tales2Go. Kids' reading comprehension often surpasses their reading levels, so audiobooks can be a tool for scaffolding learning and allowing kids to think at higher levels and learn more advanced vocabulary. Tales2Go is a great resource to get kids excited about books, increasing their listening skills and reading comprehension.

Ease of Play

The app is easy to navigate, offering several different methods of searching for books. Listening to a book is even easier.

Violence & Scariness

The level of violence depends entirely on the book being listened to. Parents can follow the app's age recommendations and try to learn a bit about a specific book before allowing kids to listen.

Sexy Stuff

The level of sexuality depends entirely on the book being listened to. Parents can follow the app's age recommendations and try to learn a bit about a specific book before allowing kids to listen.

Language

The language used depends entirely on the book being listened to. Parents can follow the app's age recommendations and try to learn a bit about a specific book before allowing kids to listen.

Consumerism

The app gives you a free 30-day trial. After that point, you have to pay to become a full-time member. You can either pay $10/month or $100/year.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

The presence of any smoking or drinking depends entirely on the book being listened to. Parents can follow the app's age recommendations and try to learn a bit about a specific book before allowing kids to listen.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Tales2Go is a children's audiobook service. The app will give you a free one-month trial, during which time you can listen to as many books as you want. After that point, though, you'll need to pay to continue using the service. While these are all children's books, the content varies greatly. Parents will want to learn more about the content of a specific book before allowing kids to listen to it.

Best app on my iPhone!

What's it about?

TALES2GO is a subscription service that offers more than 2,500 children's audiobook titles, including both classics and modern kid lit. After a free trial month, subscriptions are $9.99 a month or $99.00 for a year. During the trial, kids have access to all of the titles, including popular chapter books and children's books. The titles appeal to kids from preschool to sixth grade. Books are searchable by title or author, or can be perused by category. Parenting books and classics are available for parents, too.

Is it any good?

Tales2Go may be a pricier app once your free trial is over, but as an entertainment service, it certainly offers a ton of content for the money. There are (at the time of this review) more 1,600 audiobooks available through the app, and while many are short tales you may never have heard of, there are also big bestsellers like Diary of a Wimpy Kid and How to Train Your Dragon. The app has a simple, easy-to-use interface and offers a slew of different search parameters. If an audiobook service is what your kids are looking for, Tales2Go should fit the bill nicely.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Find a time to listen to audiobooks together -- in the car, during snack time, before bed, or whenever works for the family.

  • Talk to kids about the books. Make connections to other books, movies, or experiences. Discuss favorite parts or characters you identify with.
