A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Ease of Play

Version 3 of this popular rhythm game is much easier to play than 2.6. Tapulous added a much-needed tutorial for novices and completely redesigned the game with bigger notes, a more obvious landing area, and immediate feedback on misses. The only sour note is that now you have to level up to unlock tracks that used to be available for free.

Violence
Sex

The game itself is free of sexual content, not counting possibly iffy lyrics. However, the online chat rooms are full of sexual innuendo and outright propositions. Some profiles feature photos of full-frontal female nudity.

Language

Chat room visitors are fond of "f--k," "s--t," and making various lewd references to female anatomy.

Consumerism

This free app is full of ads and in-game purchase links for iTunes songs. Playing earns virtual gold coins, which can be used to unlock premium tap tracks.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this rhythm game is quite nice for a free app, but version 3 adds access to a gaming network that has some pretty raunchy chat rooms and user profiles. Kids are supposed to be at least 13 to use chat, and the rooms are supposedly moderated, but we saw no indication that Tapulous was monitoring the content. That's a shame, because impromptu online jams are one of the game's best options.

Is it any good?

It's no Rock Band, but Tap Tap Revenge looks and plays great, especially for a free game, which Version 3 currently is. The songs, mostly alternative rock, are fun and easy to perform. The compact design conveniently puts stats, mini-profile, and options all on one screen. But where the game really shines is online, where there's always a jam session waiting to be joined. The immediate gratification of seeing how you stack up against others relieves that feeling of just tap-tapping away all alone.
