What’s It About?
TEACH ME TIME opens to an analog clock with the current time displayed. Users click on the Settings gear in the top-left corner to begin Learning Mode. Then kids can select how the digital time is given -- ending in ":01," ":05," ":10," ":15," ":30," or full hours -- and the number of questions they'll answer. Once they press save, kids match the time on the analog clock to the time on the digital clock, and they can see the number they matched correctly.
Is It Any Good?
Teach Me Time provides a visually simple tool for reading an analog clock. It doesn't provide direct instruction about how to read an analog clock and, instead, gives kids an opportunity to practice matching analog representation to digital display. Feedback on whether the time is correct or incorrect is instant, but there aren't opportunities for kids to try again or understand why they were wrong. Teach Me Time also doesn't collect long-term data, so it's easy to miss patterns (such as not counting by fives when selecting the minute-hand location). Because there are no child-friendly elements, it may be hard to entice kids to use this app.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about different ways that time has been kept historically: sundials, hourglasses, analog clocks, watches, digital clocks, and phones. Discuss which seems the easiest to use today and why it's important to be familiar with many ways to keep time.
Parents can point out where analog clocks exist in their homes or communities. Do kids see clocks on buildings? Do they know anyone who wears a watch?
