A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Ease of Play

Interaction with the storybook itself is very intuitive, and there are many options for different reading levels and age groups. However, some of the extra learning options are less intuitive to use, and sometimes the highlighted words don't match up exactly with the narrator's voice.

Violence & Scariness

Cartoon violence, including the wolf chasing after the pigs, blowing down their houses, and falling into boiling water.

Sexy Stuff

There are links to other apps by the publisher on the main menu as well as on a page at the end of the book. The main menu also has options to sign up for the publisher's mailing list and to become a fan on Facebook.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that The Three Little Pigs HD - So Ouat! is a storybook with many features that add to the app's educational value: word highlighting, multiple languages (English, Spanish, and French), definitions (given as pictures or sentences), cursive writing (the Spanish and French versions are in cursive; it's optional for English), and more. Some of these added features aren't quiet intuitive to use, and the definition functionality has some room for improvement. The app has a mini-game that allows kids to put the animated images from the story in order; kids can then watch all the scenes together in one video. There are many places in the app for learning about the publisher's other products.

Is it any good?

THE THREE LITTLE PIGS HD - SO OUAT! is a multi-faceted storybook with some complex teaching features. The animated images might pull kids' attention away from the printed word, but it adds another aspect to the storybook. The many educational features in the storybook (highlighting vowels, giving visual and printed definitions, displaying cursive, giving reading practice, foreign language use) help this stand out from other books. There are two modes for reading, depending on the reader's age. The mini-game can be used to teach kids to put scenes in order, but kids will also have fun putting the scenes out of order and playing the video.

On the downside? The built-in definitions could use some improvement; there are many missing definitions that would be helpful to kids, and some of the words that are defined aren't described well. But otherwise, it's a solid app that kids will enjoy.
