What parents need to know

Note: This app will be defunct in December, 2021.

Parents need to know that Threads from Instagram is a separate app that integrates with Instagram to allow teens to communicate more easily with their close friends, though they can exchange messages with any Instagram contacts. The app requests location data and uses that information to update status -- "on the move," for example -- when riding somewhere, though that feature can be turned off. When location data is constantly running, though, beware about quickly running through battery life. Though there's no mature content generated by the app, users can share content with profanity, violence, or sexy stuff. And though this app doesn't inspire as many concerns as Instagram and could be safely used by younger teens, its direct link to Instagram makes it more appropriate for older teens. Read the developer's privacy policy for details on how your (or your kids') information is collected, used, and shared and any choices you may have in the matter, and note that privacy policies and terms of service frequently change.

What's it about?

THREADS FROM INSTAGRAM integrates seamlessly with Instagram, creating a space to communicate quickly with close friends. Choose up to eight friends to individually share photos and videos with directly from your camera or share with your entire "close friends" group, just as you have been able to from Instagram. Though communication with this group is the priority, users can also access their full Instagram inbox. Online status is still only visible to close friends. You can change your close friends group from within this app or Instagram itself, and those friends can view your photos and updates from either app as well. When sharing photos, you can select one close friend or send to the whole list, and you can choose to allow the photo to be viewed once, replayed, or kept in chat. Auto-status can be manually selected and customized using an emoji and word, or you can allow Threads access to your location to automatically update your status. No specific location information is shared with your friends, though.

Is it any good?

Keeping your close friends updated always can be done in just a few taps. The option to share with just "close friends" has been available on Instagram for a while, but Threads for Instagram makes updating that group quicker and easier. Even better, switching between this app and Instagram is easy, and friends don't have to have Threads installed to communicate with you. It just makes it easier on the person posting or sharing. However, a teen's whole Instagram inbox is also available in the app. So, while it prioritizes chatting with your besties, it lets you access messages from all of your contacts. One advantage is that this app is truly about connecting with people rather than scrolling through an endless feed with potentially negative comments and mature content. So, if your teen focuses more on Threads for Instagram than the main app, it might lead to more connection and less scrolling.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about the pros and cons of giving Threads from Instagram access to location data. Is it a convenience to update close friends what you are doing -- even if the information may be inaccurate? Or is it better to have some privacy in that area?

  • Discuss the differences in real-life close friends and social media close friends. Do the two match up?
