Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 12 for iPad

Golf for dedicated duffers, with optional Facebook game.

What parents need to know

Educational value

While the app could potentially foster a child's interest in golf, Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 12 for iPad wasn't created with educational intent, and we don't recommend it for learning.

Ease of play

The general idea behind the swipe-based swing is easy enough, but the accuracy of those controls is still an issue. Little errors can take what should be an easy shot and turn it into a nightmare.

The app is meant to encourage players to buy the full console version of the game. While user-created characters do not feature licensed clothing or equipment, pro characters do (such as Tiger wearing the Nike swoosh logo). Also, pictures of pros that appear between holes show those players wearing hats, shirts, and more with logos on them. Additionally, a "get more games" tab on the main menu takes users to a screen promoting more EA apps.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 12 for iPad is a golf simulation game featuring several of the sport's biggest stars. Beyond the standard golf game, the app features a Facebook-tied social game, called Closest to the Pin, that lets users compete to see who can drive the ball closest to a chosen hole on a random course. To participate, your picture from Facebook is shown in the competition, but no strangers can see the information. The game does not feature online multiplayer, meaning any opponents children will face need to be in the same room. The controls lack some tuning, which could make the game too difficult for young fans of golf. And corporate logos are found throughout the game. The iPhone version of the app is identical to the iPad version.

What's it about?

Players attempt to get the lowest possible number of strokes on a variety of well-known courses. They swing clubs by swiping the screen. A controlled, straight stroke can take you down the course nicely, but if your finger drifts left or right, you will hook or slice the ball. Players can choose which club to use or use the game's \"caddy\" function. The game also includes a \"Closest to the Pin\" Facebook mini-game that lets you compete against Facebook friends to see who can get their shot closest to a particular hole.

Is it any good?

Compared to its peers, Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 12 is one of the best golf games on the iPad, but judged against the larger console gaming category, it falls a bit short. The swipe mechanic used to take shots works fine most of the time, but occasionally adds more power than you expect -- and little errors in the angle of your swipe can have tremendous consequences on screen. However, these controls do provide you with the ability to shoot the ball at a slight angle and add some English to it, which affects its landing. The commentary is also sometimes inappropriate for the situation on screen -- not in an offensive way, but it often seems disconnected to the player's situation. Players can create their own character or use one of the pros, but it doesn't tremendously affect gameplay. All of this said, the game looks great and the Closest to the Pin challenge is one of the better Facebook integrations of any app. Dedicated duffers might like parts of this app, but casual fans of the sport -- and young players -- are likely to get frustrated.

Game Malfunctions Constantly

This game has completely stopped working on my Ipad. Not sure why and I can't seem to find a fix for it.
