To-Fu: The Trials of Chi HD

Puzzler has a unique star and fun but repetitive gameplay.

What parents need to know

Ease of play

Because this app requires precise aiming and a keen eye for detail, there is definitely some challenge involved in the dozens of levels throughout the game. However, because there is only one real control mechanism -- flinging To-Fu from wall to wall -- it is easy for players to grasp the game's basic maneuvers. In the end, it's a game that is easy to play but difficult to master, especially in the later levels.

Violence & scariness

If To-Fu hits any of the various hazards -- spikes, buzz saws, lasers, etc. -- he displays a look of pain and falls to the bottom of the screen. Players then have to start over. However, violence is never encouraged and there is never any reward for inflicting pain on To-Fu.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that To-Fu: The Trials of Chi HD is a puzzle game that features To-Fu, a cartoon character made of tofu. Players touch the screen to squeeze and stretch out To-Fu in such a way that he springs from wall-to-wall while collecting stars and avoiding a variety of hazards -- buzz saws, spikes, lasers, etc. It is possible for To-Fu to collide with the hazards, which makes him fall off the screen. However, this is neither encouraged nor graphically depicted.

Is it any good?

TO-FU: THE TRIALS OF CHI HD is unique because it stars a tofu character. Not a lot of games can say that. It also has a neat, inviting visual style with crisp and colorful graphics. Those factors make it a fun game to play. However, after a while, it becomes a bit stale since the gameplay is the same thing over and over again. And while some of the levels are genuinely challenging and require a lot of thinking and trial-and-error, most are uninspired and allow players to breeze right through. In the end, it is a run-of-the-mill casual gaming app that players will no doubt find fun for a while but grow tired of quickly.
