Educational Value

Kids can learn about strategies for quickly adding and subtracting numbers within 1,000. As they complete math problems, kids use regrouping, the associative property, the commutative property, and strategies such as "count on" and "add on." In addition to building fluency through practice, the puzzles require kids to use strategic thinking and problem-solving skills. If kids get stuck on a puzzle, they can access hints. Constructive, visual feedback is given for incorrect solutions. Though it requires kids to dive into the math with only a loose connection to the treasure-hunt story, the leveled approach and puzzle-like challenges make Treasure Sums - Lumio Addition and Subtraction (Full Version) a strong choice for mental math practice.

Ease of Play

Figuring out gameplay is easy, but navigation is a bit cumbersome; a little slow to load new levels and activities.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Treasure Sums - Lumio Addition and Subtraction (Full Version) is a set of story-based games that help kids boost their addition and subtraction skills. Kids follow the tale of the lost treasures of Lima as they complete math problems and unlock levels. Instructional support and hints are offered for each level, and kids earn rewards for answering questions correctly. Unlike other Lumio apps, this one doesn't use pictures to build understanding, which makes it a touch more challenging.

What's it about?

TREASURE SUMS - LUMIO ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION (FULL VERSION) begins with a story of lost treasure that runs through the game. There are three episodes: Each episode focuses on a different skill -- including mental addition and subtraction -- and challenges kids with two levels of difficulty. In the first episode, kids are given shapes, and they must drag numbers into each shape so the numbers add up to a given sum. Some shapes overlap, but the same sum must be used for each individual shape. Within each level, kids follow a learning path -- Learn, Time Challenge, Play, and Lightning Challenge -- to unlock a series of activities that lets them build, practice, and assess their skills.

Is it any good?

As kids use mental math strategies to place the numbers in the right places, they build fact fluency and problem-solving skills. The puzzles offer a unique opportunity for kids to apply various addition and subtraction strategies, and the story line adds a fun twist. Hints and feedback are constructive and support learning, encouraging kids to figure out the solutions on their own. Although kids can easily view the number of levels they've completed, it would be nice to see support for multiple users and the ability to view a more detailed progress summary. Also, though the developer's other apps include a very visual approach, this installment only uses numerals; the "shape sums" approach is effective, but it'll likely work better with slightly older kids. Overall, this app is a well-rounded tool for both instructional support and targeted practice.
