Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Word SLapPs Vocabulary was created by a speech and language pathologist to help young kids learn vocabulary specific to their world. The photo-based games use a voice-over to instruct kids to "Find the chicken" out of a set of animal photos, or "Find the color pink" in a block of various colors. Parents or teachers can upload their own photos and place them into categories, or kids can play the preset categories of colors and animals. The app displays scores and offers a number of customizable settings.

What's it about?

Choose a category (such as colors or animals) and a level, and your kid begins to match photos with spoken vocabulary words. Depending on the level, kids will see up to five images to choose from. When kids tap the picture that matches the spoken word, a reward image (such as an animated boat) pops up in the picture's place. Parents can upload and save photos of their own into categories and share them with others using Dropbox. The app keeps a log of the dates your kid plays, the category, and the percentage correct.

QUALITY

The changeable backgrounds and themes in WORD SLAPPS VOCABULARY help keep vocabulary practice fresh and fun for little ones. This app's usefulness may largely depend upon how involved parents want to be with uploading, saving, and categorizing their own photos. The categories currently in the app -- colors and animals -- are well-done but limited in scope. With more photos and customization, this app could become very useful in building vocabulary.

Families can talk about...

  • Upload images of everyday objects your kid sees but may not know all the names for.

  • Try using this app to teach your child a second language by recording the vocabulary word in a different language. You can look up simple words and pronunciations online.
