A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Kids can learn about physical science and experimental design. Through observation, they learn how changes in variables affect the outcome of an experiment. This helps kids deepen their understanding of challenging topics. Although this is a virtual experiment and not quite the real thing, exploring experimental setups at the tap of a finger can be meaningful and engaging. Learning is open-ended and encourages kids to explore at their own pace. Scores and concrete answers are not provided, and kids have to keep track of observations and results on their own. Though not a replacement for the real thing, Xperica HD Pro promotes scientific inquiry and reinforces several key physical scientific concepts.

Ease of Play

Plenty of guidance is provided for users to navigate and use the touch features.

There's a link for users to send an automatically drafted email, encouraging friends to purchase the app.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Xperica HD Pro is an interactive tool that lets kids manipulate variables in physical science experiments. The app offers 10 experiments, each of which is designed to explore a particular topic. As they manipulate different variables, kids observe how their changes affect the experiment as a whole. For example, when kids explore the simple pendulum experiment, they can change the mass of a ball and the length of a string to observe how these changes affect the motion of the pendulum. At the time of this review, the challenges feature was not functioning properly.

What's it about?

XPERICA HD PRO is all about getting kids interested in experiments and making scientific observations. On the home screen, kids can choose from 10 experiments, and each one includes background information, goals, procedures, and a list of apparatuses. Once they choose an experiment, kids are prompted to tap on the Experiment button to read the goals. If they need more information, kids can tap on the Learn button. The Procedure button gives kids a step-by-step guide for completing the experiment, and the Apparatus button lists the materials used in the experiment. Kids can then begin to manipulate variables in the experiment and observe the outcome. This is the most engaging and empowering part of the app, and kids can instantly see how their changes affect the experiment as a whole.

Is it any good?

Xperica HD Pro is a great way for kids to explore and form a better understanding of physical science concepts through experimentation. It's fun to see what happens when variables are changed, but kids need to play close attention to what they're doing to fully understand how these changes relate to the science concepts. There's a lot of helpful information to guide kids through each experiment. However, some of the topics are complex, so kids with a background in physical science would benefit most from the learning experience.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Encourage kids to sketch the experimental set-ups and record their observations and results in a science journal for more concrete learning.

  • Ask kids to make predictions before exploring the experiments.
