A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Kids can learn about challenging math topics that may be tricky for them on Yup. Topics include pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and basic calculus. There isn't any content built into the app; everything that the tutors teach is based on the questions kids ask. Efforts to make the app more user-friendly by adding more math symbols and more accessible by adding audio output features would boost its learning value, as would written extension materials.

Ease of Play

Very easy to use. Follow the steps to share the problem via photo and line drawing, then follow the questions from the tutor.

Once a math tutor is found, you can view their credentials and tap Start Session or End Session (you'll be charged a 5 minute minimum for any session). Then enter a chat conversation with the tutor, and follow their leading questions or instructions on how to solve your problem. At the end, you will see how long your session was, and rate the tutor.

Is it any good?

This app could be a real life-saver for middle and high school student struggling with math, chemistry or physics homework. Yup - Homework Help with Math & Chemistry Tutors is a paid subscription service, but at the time of this review users can test it out with a free month-long trial to find out for free if it's valuable to your student. The subjects and course lists tutors cover are deep and wide, from pre-algebra to AP chemistry, thermodynamics and calculus. Tutors provide students with leading questions and step-by-step problem solving, not just answers like some math help apps. Users can rate and send feedback on their tutor after each session, and they can go back to session logs to review the conversation. For many students, Yup's subscription price is worth the time and frustration that this 24/7 tutoring service can save.
