Our Friends' Favorites: Tom Schaar's Hot Picks for Apps and Games
In the Our Friends' Favorites series, we ask Common Sense Media friends and partners to share their top media picks, and this time we turned to skateboarder Tom Schaar to find out his favorite games and apps. Tom, who just turned 14, was the youngest skateboarder to successfully land a "900" (2.5 revolutions in the air), the first skateboarder to land a "1080" (3 revolutions), and the youngest-ever X Games gold medalist.
Tom will also be a You Got Game honoree at GameOn, a Common Sense Media fundraising event Sept. 29 at the Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, CA. The event's open to the public -- see details below.
My favorite video game is Tony Hawk's Project 8, by far the best Tony Hawk game. When I first played it, I imagined myself actually being able to do some of the tricks. And eventually I did in real life! Another favorite game is Skate 2.
With apps, I get obsessed with them for a little while and then I'm on to the next. My current favorites are Bike Race and Bob Burnquist's Dreamland -– both are really fun.
GameOn is a fun event for the whole family -- an afternoon of technology, sports, play, and learning, where game trucks will showcase video games that Common Sense Media considers great, healthy fun for kids. And iPads loaded with favorite and new apps, suitable for all ages, will be available for play. There'll be plenty of traditional, physical play as well, with activities organized by Fun and Sports, Two Bit Circus, and Playward, and a celebrity athlete basketball game of HORSE.
Also, young skateboarding fans can design their own skateboards with CreateASkate, the wizard behind Tom Schaar's Element skateboards!
Food will be provided by Wolfgang Puck, as well as some of the best food trucks in Los Angeles. Other notable attendees include Ashley Rickards, star of MTV's Awkward; Former NBA stars Baron Davis, Jarron Collins, and Jason Collins.
All proceeds benefit Common Sense Media, allowing us to provide kids, parents, and educators with the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in a constantly connected digital life.
