What's the Story?
BROWN IS WARM, BLACK IS BRIGHT is a poetic story told through the eyes of a young girl. She's observant and appreciative while experiencing the world around her when she's out with her dog. The little girl observes where black and brown are found in nature on a beautiful autumn day, such as leaves on a tree or puddles on the ground. She carries these observations back home and shares that "brown is sweet" while embracing her father, and "black is blossoming" while reading about praised figures from Black history. Her journey of appreciation for black and brown continues as she falls asleep and enters into a dream.
Is It Any Good?
This is a cute and poetic story for young readers. Brown Is Warm, Black Is Bright identifies the importance and strength of the colors black and brown in the world around us, while connecting this admiration to Black lives and historical figures. Mallett's images are dreamy and soft. Readers are left with a greater appreciation for two of earth's most prevalent and beautiful colors.
