Packed with facts and personal information, this is more than a standard picture book and provides young readers with an excellent biography of a driven, trailblazing Black woman. The story is told as a conversation with a young Black girl, so there are lots of ways for readers to connect Harris' experiences with their own. Kamala Harris: Rooted in Justice is an inspiring call to action, and shows how much perseverance and hard work it takes to be a success. The message here centers on fighting for justice, but it returns over and over again to the work required to make forward progress. And Laura Freeman's colorful, engaging illustrations on every page reflect the vibrant life Harris built and the energy in her communities.
