Sweet story, up until the end
I enjoyed this book for the most part, you typical 'coming-of-age' type tale with sweet characters. Nothing drastic had happened, until maybe 30 pages from the end. BAM! Suddenly this children's story went from G to PG-13, unplanned pregnancies, attempted murder, it was a lot to take in! In another setting, this could have been a bit easier to swallow but for a story that was as child friendly as it was that far, it was a tad upsetting to see everything happen as it did.

Thought provoking and well written
Defiantly for the more mature readers. If you have kids who are fans of her other books, sci-fi this is not. Real world problems and bits of history mixed in.

The Silent Boy- Took Me To Another Place
Another one of Lowry's most fantastic pieces. A very moving story of a boy and his life with others. I would only recommend this for VERY mature children who can handle a lot of emotion and understand complex feeling and plots. If the child you're looking for to read this has these qualities, and loves a good read, then I'm positive they will like it. Very dark, tragic story of loss and death.

Good for older kids but not for tweens.
I thought The Silent Boy was a pretty good book except that it sort of left me hanging at the end. Plus it was really sad at the end and I think that the ending was really bad, otherwise it was a pretty good book, but it's not on my MUST READ list.

I thought the book was sad. There were questions that were unanswered and thats kind of annoying. The Silen boy was a little too slow moving for me. It was only exciting at th end.

Hmmmmmm
This book, THE SILENT BOY, was a sad but pleasing novel. Although I read it over a period of two weeks,(research project going on), I enjoyed it. The sad part though was that it really didn't have a good ending. It left a lot of my questions unanswered, and my mind unsatisfyed. I think perhaps this novel is something you should read, but I'm not saying it's fantasic. I'd much rather read THE GIVER over this, and THE SILENT BOY is not on my own, personal, MUST read list.
