A bit of bloodshed can liven up a fantasy novel, but this tale of court intrigue slathers on the gore past the point of credulity. Author Linsey Miller has obviously spent a lot of effort in What We Devour to create a complex fantastical world with a complicated system of magic. She's capable of clever plotting, witty dialogue, and offbeat characterization. Fans of A Game of Thrones might enjoy the intrigue that surrounds Lorena and her loved ones, but scene after scene of death and destruction feels gratuitous. If a reader is a fan of "grimdark" fantasy, perhaps What We Devour might give them something to chew on. Others should tread carefully.
