Did you know that we offer digital literacy and citizenship activities on Edmodo? In 2012, we partnered with the popular social network for teachers and students to create the Digital Citizenship Starter Kit, based on our free K-12 Digital Literacy and Citizenship curriculum.

This set of activities for the Edmodo platform makes it easy for teachers to introduce digital citizenship concepts such as Internet safety, identity, privacy, and cyberbullying using Edmodo’s secure platform and communication and sharing tools.

To access the activities, Edmodo members first need to "follow" the Digital Citizenship Community on the site. Then, visit the Community Collection to download the Starter Kit or add it to your Edmodo Library. The kit has two parts:

  1. Getting Started: Download the "We the Digital Citizens Pledge" poster for your classroom, and complete the Digital Citizenship Pledge lesson with your students.
  2. Digital Citizenship Modules: Locate the appropriate folder (Elementary, Middle, or High School) to download the five digital citizenship activities for your classroom. Each module includes an Edmodo-focused activity to get your students started talking about digital citizenship. Should you want to take a deeper dive, each module links to a corresponding Common Sense lesson.

If you’re not familiar with Edmodo, you should definitely check into it. Educators can use it as a course manager, an online grade book, and a way to interact with students, colleagues, and peers online. You can also use the site for professional development or to easily post and share lessons.

Launched in 2008, Edmodo now has more than 41 million users worldwide. It's secure, free, and easy to use. If you haven't yet checked it out, this is a great excuse to start. Sign up here.

If you're already a regular user, the Digital Citizenship Starter Kit makes it easy to download and use digital literacy resources for your classroom.

We're thrilled that this partnership with Edmodo helps us reach so many educators who are already taking advantage of social networking and digital tools for sharing and communicating with students and colleagues.

"It’s learning about technology by using technology," our general manager of education Mike Lorion said. "Teaching kids to think critically and behave responsibly in today's fast-paced digital world is essential, and Edmodo is a perfect platform on which to provide these important foundational skills."

If you're a regular Edmodo user, we'd love to hear from you. Why do you like this tool? And how do you make use of it in your classroom?
