Some classic games have new life breathed into them with high definition bells and whistles, adding new layers to familiar formulas to create something fresh and exciting. Unfortunately, Commandos 2 HD Remaster goes in the complete opposite direction, gutting features and content from the original, leaving behind a mess of a title that'll leave fans wishing this former buried treasure had stayed buried.

For starters, while the game has been dubbed an "HD Remaster," the visuals are extremely rough. Sure, some of the backgrounds have added detail, but the character models are bland and move in a noticeably awkward manner. The controls, supposedly revamped for this release, are buggy and often unresponsive. Also, in an odd move for a game set during the height of World War II, most direct references to Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan have been removed. This makes the overall story feel watered down and even incomplete. Making matters worse, the remaster has completely stripped away the multiplayer component. The overall effect makes the game feel generic, unfinished, and significantly less than what the original Commandos 2 had to offer.
