What parents need to know

Educational value

Funky Barn 3D wasn't created with educational intent, and we don't recommend it for learning.

Positive messages

The game encourages kids to work hard to reap the benefits.

Positive role models

Most of the "characters" are animals and are neutral. The game narrator/tutorial guide is encouraging and helpful. One of the characters is grumpy, but in a low-key way.

Ease of play

The game's tutorial covers most of what you need to know, but occasionally something crops up that you aren't prepared for and don't know how to handle. There are thought bubbles that are unclear and the "Challenge Levels" have unspecified goals. The standard way for moving things around on screen requires using the stylus on the touch screen and one of the rear right/left buttons. It can take some practice to use both while still holding the device and kids with small hands may struggle. There is an alternative, but it isn't mentioned in the tutorial. This game does not auto-save.

Violence & scariness

Animals may occasionally be carried off by a fox, abducted by aliens, or flown away in a tornado. There's nothing particularly graphic about any of these, and it's easy to miss seeing them happen if you're on another part of the farm.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Funky Barn 3D is a farm simulation game where kids choose which animals and machines to make for inclusion in their farm. The game requires some reading to get through the tutorial, but not much after that. What it does require is a certain dexterity that younger kids often don't possess. Kids will also need to be able to plan out their farm in order to make the best use of the machines that help collect animal products and to keep the animals apart. Parents need to remember that Nintendo is warning all parents not to allow kids age six and under to view the graphics in 3D because that viewing "may cause vision damage." The Nintendo 3DS offers parents the ability to lock out the use of 3D graphics in the system's Parental Controls. This game does not auto-save.

What's it about?

FUNKY BARN 3D is a family simulation game with some cute twists. You've recently inherited a farm from your uncle, but there isn't much going on. You'll start with some money, land, and a machine that sells products for you. Slowly the animals will start to arrive and you'll need to meet their needs for shelter, food, protection, and decoration. You can purchase special machines to help you collect wool, eggs, milk, fruit, and other products, and even to transport the goods to the selling machine. Beware of foxes, tornados, thunderstorms, and aliens who will hinder your progress. If you keep upgrading your farm, you'll eventually reach the top status. There are three farms of increasing difficulty, and three \"challenge\" games where you'll need to meet objectives within a time limit.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

Funky Barn 3D has an engaging premise, and it features cute animals and wacky machines that are interesting to watch. This playful game is, at times, flat-out silly. However, its frustrating interface, too much micro-managing, and eventual repetitive play may dampen the fun. The default controls are likely to be difficult for young kids and tiring for everyone else.

Sim fans will probably either hate the game or feel compelled to work their way through it to see what they can unlock. Funky Barn 3D does show some sparkle in the Challenge modes, which require you to repair/rebuild a farm within a given time limit. Unfortunately, there are only three of those and they can only be unlocked by completing the corresponding full-farm levels. This game comes close, but doesn't quite make it. Still, kids who like sim games will probably be quick to overlook the negatives and just enjoy the silliness of the game.
