Let's Cheer!

Realistic cheers must be practiced in order to do well.

What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn some of the choreography to cheer routines, but more importantly, they learn the importance of practice and perseverance. It's unlikely that most kids will nail these routines from the start; rehearsal is key to a good performance. It's a fantastic lesson that can be applied to so many other facets of a child's life. And since players are up on their feet throughout, perhaps they'll also get the chance to learn the joys of a good endorphin rush. They can even workout with a friend. Let's Cheer makes competitive cheerleading a virtual experience as kids practice repeatedly to get good at these physically demanding routines.

Positive messages

The game stresses the importance of training and practice before a performance. It also promotes physical fitness.

Positive role models

The game offers an ethnically diverse selection of head cheerleaders. They are generally very positive and encouraging in their comments to you.

Ease of play

Routines range from incredibly easy to very difficult. Practice is essential for the higher-level cheers.

Not applicable

A few of the songs have mildly suggestive lyrics, including the term "make love." There's one reference to see-through shirts making you go "woo-hoo."

Drinking, drugs, & smoking

There are references to drinking in at least one of the songs (i.e., "I've had a little bit too much...").

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Let's Cheer! is a Kinect game that allows kids to use their entire bodies to practice cheering routines and then perform them before virtual audiences. The routines get progressively more difficult and the harder ones will require a good deal of practice. A few of the songs that these cheers are set to contain mildly suggestive lyrics or references to alcohol; however kids are unlikely to pay the lyrics much attention when they're concentrating on following complicated choreography.

What's it about?

LET'S CHEER! puts players on a virtual cheer squad. They'll learn and practice routines on various difficulty levels, moving from local sports events, up through regionals, and eventually qualifying for national performances. You need to watch the squad leader carefully and mimic her moves as closely as possible. On harder routines, you'll be asked to shout out parts of the cheers as well.

Is it any good?

Let's Cheer! has a nice way of allowing kids to get their bearings and learn the ropes with its slowed down, step-by-step training sessions for each new routine. The action speeds up a lot, though, when you move on to performance mode. And there'll be a lot of extra flair added, so you still need to pay close attention, even if you nailed the cheer in rehearsal. The early routines are incredibly easy and get you feeling really good about yourself; then the tough ones throw you for a loop and make you realize how far you have to go. Two-player team mode is a nice addition for when you want to play with a friend.
