What’s It About?
MOSHI MONSTERS: KATSUMA UNLEASHED puts players in the role of a colorful Moshi Monster who sets out on a side-scrolling adventure to rescue friends kidnapped by the evil Dr. Strangelove. After players complete the main story, they can continue to play a handful of mini-games. But this game doesn't exist to tell a compelling story so much as it does to expand the Moshi Monsters experience to a media beyond the website that originally created the franchise.
Is It Any Good?
Moshi Monsters: Katsuma Unleashed doesn't bring anything drastically new to the table, and it won't go down in history as one of the all-time greats of its genre. That said, it succeeds modestly in its ambition to be a fun and colorful adventure for its young target audience. The game uses a tried-and-true formula with basic gameplay, colorful graphics, and smooth controls. Players who are already fans of the Moshi Monsters website will enjoy the familiar characters and themes. And, to its credit, the game does a good job of living up to the well-designed aesthetic and charm of the website. On its own, though, it doesn't really stand out among the many great side-scrolling platformers available for Nintendo 3DS.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Parents can discuss this game's apparent consumerism via its promotion of a paid website. Does this game make you want to spend more time on the Moshi Monsters site? Is that a good or a bad thing?
Have you ever been in a tough situation in which you thought the odds were against you? How did you handle the situation?
If your friends were in danger, what would you be willing to do to save them?
