My Riding Stables 3D: Jumping for the Team

Fun horse sim for girls encourages teamwork.

What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn about different breeds of horses and how to care for them, although the game is sometimes unrealistic -- such as when the horse rolls over onto its back like a puppy to have its belly scratched. With a story that explores rivalries, kids also learn the value of teamwork and friendship.

Positive messages

The game contains positive messages such as overcoming fear and insecurity, owning up to mistakes and bad behavior, and setting aside personal rivalries and jealousy to work as a team.

Positive role models

Characters aren't perfect but are seen to evolve and mature over time into team players who become more supportive of each other. A greedy banker set on repossessing the ranch is cast as the game's villain.

Ease of play

The game is relatively easy to play, with gradually increasing difficulty. Controls involve a mix of stylus tapping and tilting the 3DS.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that My Riding Stables 3D: Jumping for the Team is a simulation wherein players care for a stable of horses and compete in horse-jumping tournaments. The game's message is ultimately positive, as characters overcome jealousy and competitive rivalries to work as a team. Nintendo discourages kids under age 6 from viewing 3-D graphics, but the 3DS's 3-D graphics can be turned off with a slider and by using the device's parental controls.

What's it about?

The story revolves around a young female horse rider who returns to the stable after a bad fall and works hard to get her confidence back. She also helps rescue the ranch from the brink of bankruptcy. MY RIDING STABLES 3D: JUMPING FOR THE TEAM is part pet sim and part sports game: players care for horses in the stables by grooming them, giving them food and water, and playing with them, but they also take them onto the track to practice agility and obedience games, jumping, target shooting, and other activities before attempting the \"real thing\" in tournaments.

Is it any good?

My Riding Stables 3D: Jumping for the Team is a fun title that lets players care for and ride not only their own customized horse but several other animals belonging to other characters. Some of the activities feel tedious -- you massage the horse by dragging the stylus along its body for almost a full minute -- but others, such as target shooting on horseback by tilting the 3DS, feel fresh and challenging. Players must earn a certain grade on each activity to advance the story, but they can retry as many times as it takes to get something right. A story rife with intrigue and rivalries as well as plenty of things to unlock make this a great choice for horse fans.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about the importance of teamwork, even in an individual sport like horse jumping. Did rivalries make the team perform better or worse?

  • Talk about the amount of focus, dedication, and hard work required to compete in sports at an elite level. Is this something you would want to do?
