A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this game.

Positive Messages

Notwithstanding messages of bravery and survival, predominant themes of murder and horror makes it difficult to extract an overall positive message.

Positive Role Models & Representations

Playable characters have strong positive qualities, such as never giving up, fighting through extreme odds, working together with others to overcome evil.

Ease of Play

Turn-based combat requires players to know when to attack, defend, use items, skills. Needs to be learned after trial and error; not always easy.

Violence

Players select attacks, other moves; successful hits to enemies result in flashes of light. But cut scenes show characters with gunshot wounds lying in pools of blood.

Sex

Sexually suggestive dialogue, including references to being "horny" and female breasts. Several female characters with exposed cleavage.

Language

"Damn," "ass," and "s--t" used occasionally.

Consumerism
Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

One character always shown with a cigar in his mouth. Handful of references to alcohol, including a warrior described as being more powerful after drinking rum.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker is a role-playing game where players try to solve a series of increasingly vast and dangerous mysteries. During the course of the adventure, players engage in turn-based battles against monsters; though there's no blood shown during battle, cut scenes show characters being shot and lying in pools of blood. Many female characters are shown in low-cut or cleavage-revealing outfits, and there's some flirtatious dialogue about female breasts, jokes about being "horny," and the like. There are some occasional references to alcohol about a warrior being "drunk" on rum. There's also one character who's always seen with a cigar in his mouth. Swearing is a more common part of the dialogue, with the words "damn" and "hell" and, less frequently, "s--t" and "ass" appearing throughout.

It's not really violent, but the plot is very deep.

What's it about?

SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI: DEVIL SURVIVOR 2 RECORD BREAKER puts players in a mysterious post-apocalyptic environment ruled by demons where fear is the predominant feeling. At the start of the game, the main character receives a cryptic, troublesome text that directs you to a website predicting death. From there, the deep, engaging story centers on staying alive and making sure everyone else in your group remains safe. Through a series of winding and twisting plot turns, players suddenly realize there's much more at stake than their own lives and must figure out how to overcome the increasingly difficult obstacles.

Is it any good?

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker is part of the very long-running and distinctive Shin Megami Tensei video game series, all known for very complex, surreal, and sometimes overtly confusing story lines. This game fits that mold very well, with an intricate story; so long as players have the attention and focus to pay attention to all the minute details and frequent plot twists, they'll no doubt appreciate the masterful way such an intricate and imaginative story plays out.

But the gameplay itself remains somewhat flat. Though there are various puzzles and battle strategies for players to master, there's nothing inherently unique or truly captivating about the actual game mechanics, which is a disappointment considering how well crafted the overarching story is. But even with that subpar feature about Devil Survivor 2, anyone with the patience and focus to get through the entire game will come away completely satisfied.

  • Families can talk about the violence in Devil Survivor 2. Given some of the violent imagery, how does this set the overall tone? Do you think it's necessary?

  • Do you think the world could face the kind of destruction seen in this game? What would cause it?
