SongPop

(i)

Fast-paced Facebook music trivia game, has privacy concerns.

What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn about a wide variety of pop music trivia in categories that focus on era (such as 60's and 70's rock), genre (rock, pop, grunge, rap), content (love songs), and specific artists like Elton John. Kids must choose the correct answers as quickly as possible to earn the most points. If they don't know the answer, kids can use deductive reasoning to choose the most likely answer from four possibilities. SongPop is a fun and fast-paced music trivia game where kids learn about different music genres while being social.

Positive messages

Friendly competition is encouraged. Rivals can send each other messages via chat; the content is up to the sender. Messages in the song lyrics themselves are mixed, and might contain objectionable content.

Positive role models

There are no characters in the game.

Ease of play

Quick-thinking and fast typing skills are required to do well at SongPop. The more knowledge players have about pop music genres, the better they'll do.

Violence
Not applicable
Sex

Players might hear sexual references in the lyrics, which are unsensored. "Love songs" is one of the quiz genres, but the emphasis is on romantic love.

Language

Some of the rap songs feature unsensored lyrics with strong language including f--k, s--t, and the "N" word.

Consumerism

Music tracks are accompanied by links to buy and download the songs. Players spend coins to unlock new songs and power-ups. Coins are earned very slowly, but players can purchase coins with real-world cash as well. A banner ad runs unobtrusively along the bottom of the screen. VIP subscriptions, which start at $2.08 per week, unlock perks like no ads, unlimited chatting, longer music clips, and better quality sound.

Drinking, drugs, & smoking

Lyrics are unsensored and may contain references to marijuana and other drugs, liquor, smoking, and so on.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that SongPop is a music trivia game played on Facebook, as well as Android and iOS mobile devices. Players can challenge their Facebook friends, but can also choose to be paired with strangers, which raises privacy and safety concerns - especially since online chatting is enabled between players after they've completed four quiz rounds together. SongPop supports ad hoc in-game purchases, or players can pay a weekly, monthly, or yearly subscription to enjoy various perks. Some of the songs, especially in the rap category, feature iffy lyrics.

What's it about?

In SONGPOP, players pick a musical genre, such as 80's Collection, Classic Rock, or Female Singers, then play a 5-round quiz against either a Facebook friend or an opponent chosen at random. During the quiz, players listen to song clips and try to identify the artist or the song via multiple choice. The faster you choose the correct answer, the more points you score. Gameplay is asynchronous, meaning both players don't have to be playing at the same time to participate. (In other words, you could answer your five questions, challenge a friend, then receive a notification once they've completed their answers to see who wins the round.)

Is it any good?

QUALITY

SongPop is great fun for music buffs. The song variety is pretty shallow at first, but it improves as you gradually unlock more playlists and genres. Players don't have to spend money, provided they're willing to be patient, play a lot, and earn coins. SongPop's ability to pair you with random Facebook users for quizzes means that you'll always have someone to play with even if none of your Facebook friends are willing -- that is, if you're comfortable with the potential privacy risks of engaging with strangers. It could use a better tutorial and explanation of the rules, especially for tournament mode.
